Sumation® Announces Rapid Progress In Blue Light Emitting Polymer

TOKYO, JAPAN, 6th September 2006

Sumation Co. Ltd. - a joint venture company of Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) [Nasdaq: OLED] and Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. - announces rapid progress in the development of longer lifetime blue light emitting polymers suitable for full color, video capable P-OLED displays.

The latest data obtained from Sumation’s research facilities in Cambridge, UK and Tsukuba, Japan show a lifetime1 of 20,000 hours from an initial luminance of 400cd/m², which is equivalent to more than 300,000 hours from 100cd/m². The colour coordinates of the latest blue material are (CIEx=0.14, y=0.21) and the efficiency is approximately 9cd/A. The material is soluble in common organic solvents, making it suitable for solution processing. This milestone represents a three-fold improvement in lifetime in less than a year and is the result of a concerted effort on blue material development within Sumation.

“We are very happy to report these latest performance figures for our blue light emitting polymers”, commented Sumation’s CEO and President, Dr Miyazaki. “Our UK and Japan-based R&D teams have worked seamlessly to better understand the structure-performance relationships that govern the lifetime of our materials in devices and are using this knowledge to develop better materials for our customers. We are very confident of sustaining such rapid progress well into the future”.

(1) Note to editors: ‘Lifetime’, as discussed here, refers to the time taken for a test pixel to fall to half its initial stated luminance. Lifetime estimates are based on accelerated testing of simple test devices at several high initial luminance levels, and use of these data to calculate predicted lifetimes at lower brightness levels. Translation of this single pixel data into performance in an RGB display system requires complex calculation and knowledge of the precise system design parameters such as aperture ratio, brightness and relative pixel areas. About Sumation

Sumation is a 50:50 joint venture between Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) Ltd. and Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. Sumation was formed in November of 2005 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Sumation develops, manufactures and sells P-OLED materials to the display and lighting industry.

P-OLEDs are part of the family of OLEDs, which are thin, lightweight and power efficient devices that emit light when an electric current flows. P-OLEDs offer an enhanced visual experience and superior performance characteristics compared with other flat panel display technologies such as liquid crystal displays, and have the key advantage that they can be applied in solution using printing processes.
