Mr Hattori graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology after obtaining his masters degree and joined Sumitomo Chemical in 1976. For most of his career, Mr Hattori has been based in Osaka (Kasugade), where he has held various positions in dyestuff R&D, production planning for photoresists and pharmaceutical intermediates, and manufacturing. Mr Hattori has also had responsibilities in corporate business planning and human resource management at Sumitomo Chemical's Tokyo Head Office.
Four years ago, Mr Hattori was appointed to the position of Director of Sumitomo Chemical's Tsukuba Research Laboratory.
